HBABCs’s Facilitates Oral Health and Older Adults Event for NACDD

HBABCs’s Bill Benson to Facilitate Oral Health and Older Adults Event

February 7, 2019
Bill Benson facilitated a day-long “Thought Leader Round Table” (TLRT) on oral health and chronic disease in older adults on February 7th in Washington, D.C. Hosted by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) in collaboration with the Prevention Health Foundation, and with support from GlaxoSmithKline, the primary attendees were state Chronic Disease Directors and state Dental Directors from thirteen (13) states (CO, FL, GA, ID, IA, MD, MO, NH, ND, RI, SC, VT and VA). A number of national organizations concerned about oral health also participated, including the Gerontological Society of America, American Dental Association, CDC’s Division of Oral Health, the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors, the U.S. Health Resources Service Administration, and the Administration for Community Living, among others. The TLRT addressed increased understanding of issues facing older adults in accessing oral health services and promising approaches for collaboration between states’ Chronic Disease and Oral Health programs in addressing the oral health needs of older adults. The event opened with thoughtful, well-informed and provocative remarks by Lynn Douglas Mouden, DDS, MPH, former Chief Dental Officer at CMS and former Director of the Office of Oral Health, Arkansas Department of Health; and, Paul Mulhausen, MD, a practicing geriatrician formerly with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the Iowa City, IA, V.A. Medical Center. The TLRT highlighted the profound link between poor oral health and chronic disease including heart disease, diabetes and many others. NACDD is currently working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a larger initiative on “medical-dental integration.”
